Queue Length Surveys
What are queue length surveys?
Queue length surveys are used to measure traffic volumes, providing evidence of congestion and delays. They are carried out for each lane of each junction arm.
The data can be provided either by number of vehicles or in vehicle lengths or class.
The process
The survey is undertaken by enumerators who manually count and record queue-length data. They are able to move with the vehicles to ensure accurate recordings.
We can also monitor queues using video staggered along the carriageway. This requires regular monitoring. Video is useful for queues exceeding 120 meters.
Queue length surveys can be used for:
- Traffic Engineering Design and Modelling
- Junction improvement schemes

Emissions
The UK has committed to cutting carbon emissions in the UK by 35% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. Traffic Watch can help local authorities to achieve this by regularly monitoring vehicles entering and exiting their boroughs. This can be carried out using ANPR surveys on an annual or biannual basis. Regular monitoring will provide critical information, helping councils to meet their 2020 emissions targets.
